What is the Price of Safety Training?
When considering the cost of Safety Training it is extremely important that you understand the ramifications associated with an accident investigation. There are 4 different levels of responsibility to consider.
-
The "PROPERTY OWNER" must ensure that ALL personnel working on his or her property are aware of basic safety guidelines, rules, regulations and requirements. It is not enough to "ASSUME" that the contractor will protect and indemnify the owner in the event of an accident.
The easiest way for a property owner to demonstrate that s/he has made a real effort to ensure a safe work site is to require proof that all personnel on the job have, at the very least, attended and passed an appropriate OSHA Safety Training course.
Workers, Foreman and Supervisors that have passed an OSHA Construction Safety Course are given a "registered certificate of completion" and a course Id Card (with the registration number) that should be in their possession on the job.
-
The "CONTRACTOR" must ensure that ALL personnel directly or indirectly employed as sub-contractors and independent contractors are aware of the specific construction safety guidelines, rules, regulations and requirements for the type of work they will be required to do. Contractors should develop a "site safety plan" for each job.
The safety plan should specify that ONLY personnel with proper safety training have access to the work site. One of the easiest ways for a contractor to ensure that all personnel understand basic safety guidelines, rules, regulations and requirements is to require them to pass an OSHA Construction Safety Course and have a copy of the OSHA registered certificate of completion on file.
-
The "JOB SITE FOREMAN / SUPERVISOR" must ensure that ALL personnel on the work site understand and follow safe work practices. Without proper safety training foreman and supervisors become a safety liability on the job and to the company they are employed by.
In addition to job specific safety training, passing an OSHA Construction Safety Course increases a foreman / supervisors awareness of site safety and unquestionably documents their level of knowledge.
-
The "WORKER" must ensure that s/he is knowledge about construction industry occupational safety, health standards and policies that promote workplace safety and health. Over-familiarization with a process often leads to unnecessary risks that can result in an accident.
Workers who demonstrate a conscientious effort for on the job safety by passing the OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Training Course are statistically less likely to have a serious accident and are more likely to be hired for well paying jobs.
The Bottom Line is that the Price for an OSHA Outreach Safety Training Course becomes insignificant when compared the BENEFITS and overall SAVINGS it makes possible.

REMINDER !
Beginning August 1, 2006 all workers on any job site, that is in any way partly or fully funded by the Federal Government, will be required to have in their possession an OSHA Safety Training Card.
Many States have already implemented these same minimum safety training requirements for ALL construction work. Most States that have not, plan to follow suit.
Be sure to Enroll in a Safety Training Course early. Class size for each session is limited.
